Our Vision: “Eliminating death and suffering from prostate cancer”

With prostate cancer being the leading cancer in Kiwi men we actively promote awareness of the disease and the message for men to “get checked”. Here’s some of the numbers about the extent of prostate cancer in New Zealand:

· Over 3500 men diagnosed each year – that is 10 every day

· Over 600 die every year from prostate cancer

· 1 in 8 men will get prostate cancer in their lifetime

· An estimated 41,000 men diagnosed with prostate cancer are living in New Zealand.

Prostate cancer is very treatable, especially if it is diagnosed early. That is why men over 50 should be getting checked each year by their doctor.

Men going through a diagnosis and treatment for prostate cancer will often struggle with anxiety and fear of the unknown as they look ahead in their lives. One of the main services provided by the Prostate Cancer Foundation during this difficult time is support and information for men through:

· A network of 35 support groups around NZ led by volunteers who have been through their own encounter with the disease. There are 4 groups in the Christchurch region.

· An 0800 477 678 Helpline to speak with someone and seek information · An online support forum for people to share their experiences and ask questions.

· Conferences and forums that provide information from experts – some are available as videos on the website

As a charity we rely on the support of trusts, businesses, community groups and individuals for our funding – none comes from Government.
