Make Your Kilometers Count for Canterbury Families

Every year in Canterbury, thousands of children, young people and adults are traumatised by family or sexual violence. Many of them come through Aviva’s doors, or reach out to us by phone, needing support.

Since 1973, when we were first formed as Christchurch Women’s Refuge – New Zealand’s first refuge – we have been here 24-hours a day, seven days a week, providing free support. Our name has changed, and we have evolved to now support men who use or feel they could use family violence, as well as Canterbury women and men who have suffered sexual assault. But our passion for supporting people – women, men, young people and children – at any point of their journey, from crisis through to wider personal wellbeing – has never changed.

Over 1,500 people in Canterbury come through our doors every year and last year, we received almost 4,000 calls for support. We offer individual or family support for women, men, children and young people; education programmes; home security upgrades to make homes safer from violence; low or no interest loans to support financial independence; and peer support for the longer journey towards well-being. Whatever support people need from us, we give it in the belief that everyone has the potential to overcome the effects of family or sexual violence, and a safer future is possible for us all.

Aviva needs to raise $2 million every year in order to provide our free services to the Canterbury community. These are services that change, and even save, lives. Supporting people through some of the most difficult and traumatic times of their lives is a privilege; by supporting Aviva you can you be part of someone’s story too.
